Love Comp Winner 18 August 2008
Hurrah! Eric Vonk from Holland came through with the correct answer "Michael Stuart" and has won his very own copy of the excellent Love Story
Summer Time News (Riot On Sunset Strip, Million Dollar Les Paul, Burritos, Byrds) 04 August 2008
We hope the summer season is treating everyone well. We missed a post in July (due to our busy summer schedule) and can't believe that our fantastic LOVE DVD comp hasn't been entered. (Please see last month's post for question). Really! Come on, it's a truly great movie and it's waiting to be snapped up by one lucky surfer. We'll even throw in Riot On Sunset Strip...-- our brilliant account of Love, The Byrds, Standells etc having a revolutionary pop blast in mid-60s LA.
Talking of Riot On Sunset Strip, author Domenic Priore has been keeping very busy in the USA with his regular book promotions:
RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP: ROCK, REBELLION AND HOLLYWOOD HIPPIES"
'60s Rock 'n' Roll and California Counterculture Spotlighted in "Waverly Midnights" series, July 25-September 27 at IFC Center
"Riot on Sunset Strip: Rock, Rebellion and Hollywood Hippies", a 10-film program of features and documentaries steeped in the California rock scene of the '60s, screens as part of the ongoing "Waverly Midnights" series, weekends at midnight July 25-September 27 at IFC Centre.
The first two weekend's screenings of WILD IN THE STREET and RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP will be introduced by Domenic Priore, whose meticulously researched chronicle Riot on Sunset Strip: Rock 'n' Roll's Last Stand In Hollywood inspired the series. A schedule is below.
On the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles in 1965 and 1966 an electrifying
scene appeared out of nowhere. Bands like Love, The Byrds, The Doors
and The Standells flourished, and music dethroned movies as the groovy
centre of Hollywood. Studios responded by scrambling to get hip to the
new youth culture or by producing lurid, cautionary tales of kids
trapped in a cycle of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll -- and sometimes by
pursuing both tactics in the same picture.
The program opens with WILD IN THE STREETS, the tale of a young anarchist-cum-popstar who runs for the Presidency on a platform promising 14-year-olds the vote. It continues with RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP, a B-movie soundtracked by The Standells about a cop assigned to clean up the Strip's seedy new haunts; LORD LOVE A DUCK, George Axelrod's spoof of '60s teen culture starring Tuesday Weld; counterculture head-trips PSYCH-OUT and THE TRIP (directed by Roger Corman and written by Jack Nicholson); MARYJANE, with Fabian as a high-school teacher framed for pot possession; THE COOL ONES, focusing on a go-go dancer packaged for TV stardom; and guru satire THE LOVE-INS. Also included are two rare documentaries that capture the spirit of the era first-hand: YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, featuring musicians like David Crosby, Tiny Tim and Frank Zappa, and MONDO HOLLYWOOD, a snapshot of the cultural scene in Hollywood in the late ’60s with appearances by Brigitte Bardot, Sonny & Cher, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jayne Mansfield and more.
"Riot on Sunset Strip: Rock, Rebellion and Hollywood Hippies" Weekends at midnight, July 25-September 27 July 25-26: WILD IN THE STREETS (1968, Barry Shear) August 1-2: RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP (1967, Arthur Dreifuss) August 8-9: LORD LOVE A DUCK (1966, George Axelrod) August 15-16: PSYCH-OUT (1968, Richard Rush) August 22-23: MARYJANE (1968, Maury Dexter) August 29-31: MONDO HOLLYWOOD (1967, Robert Carl Cohen) September 5-6: YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT (1968, Barry Feinstein) September 12-13: THE LOVE-INS (1967, Arthur Dreifuss) September 19-20: THE COOL ONES (1967, Gene Nelson) September 26-27: THE TRIP (1967, Roger Corman)

Another new comp: Love Story DVD + the latest news on our new title the Interactive Gibson Bible DVD + Book 24 June 2008
My aren't we good to you.
The fine people at Start Productions have given us a copy of the highly acclaimed Love Storyto give away to a lucky Jawbone site visitor/regular. We've watched the film and think it's brilliant.
To win the DVD answer this simple question: Who was Love's first drummer? Please send your answer to Jon. The prize will be drawn at random on July 15th.
Talking of Love, Arthur Lee penned the introduction for the coveted Jawbone title A Riot On Sunset Strip: Rock'n' Roll's Last Stand In Hollywood. If you haven't seen the book I advise you find a copy immediately, as it's the perfect reading companion for the Love Story movie. In the book, author Domenic Priore traces the colossal influence that Love and their ilk had on Hollywood in the mid-60s. The detailed historical research and fabulous pictures make this the ultimate chronicle of folk-rock, pop, garage, psychedelia and the wild effect it had on the city in the truly happenin' pre-hippy era. You can order the book from our site here.

New... comp. BEATLES FAB FOUR FAQ 28 May 2008
As we've just had the pleasure of guiding Stu Shea around Blighty, it seems appropriate to give five copies of his excellent book away as a prize.
Please mail Jon the answer to this simple question:
Errol Brown recorded a reggae-fied version of a signature Beatles' tune in 1969. What was the song?
Ps. Our Folk Rock box set comp. is now closed.

Ooooh... lots on: Beatles promo tour, Sid takes Million Dollar Bash to the USA, the Interactive Keyboard Bible begins filming... and more.... 15 May 2008
Our very own John & Paul (John Blaney, author of the new Jawbone title Beatles For Sale, and Stu Shea, author of Hal Leonard's acclaimed Fab Four FAQ) have been spun out onto the road by the almighty, Tasmanian Devil-like, whirlwind inducing Jawbone PR engine. The chaps have had a wonderful time enjoying some unexpected UK spring sunshine and doing a variety of radio show from Teeside to Devon, taking in Liverpool, London, Suffolk, Bristol and Gloucester along the way. Jon 'Mojo' Mills (publicist in the London office) joined the writers for two days in London visiting the BBC and a few choice hostelries, whilst Jawbone Editorial Director Tony Bacon introduced them to the wonders of the Wild West — Bristol to be precise. Everyone clicked and music and books have been discussed at great length with further titles already a possibility. Watch this space.

Meanwhile, Jawbone's very own Sid Griffin will be heading off across the pond shortly to further promote his excellent Million Dollar Bash.... This will surely be a lot of fun and we're certain that Sid will win over his fellow Americans and spread the word.

The latest title in our renowned interactive series The Totally Interactive Keyboard Biblewill begin filming in early June at The Battersea Arts Centre. Presented by keymeistersJanette Masonand Steve Lodder the film will chronicle the development of keyboards starting with the acoustic piano right through to sample based synthesizers.
As the duo guide the viewer through a wide variety of musical styles all manner of genres and styles will be covered starting with jazz and blues, moving through the 1950s and 1970s with boogie, rock and roll, gospel, rock, funk and reggae. With the advent of cheap synthesizers in the 1980s many musicians decided to ditch guitars and embrace synth soundscapes and electro or to reshape soul and latin music with complex synth based rhythms. However, as the 1990s dawned a return to the more traditional guitar, bass and drums set up with the trusty Hammond organ taking a leading role in indie, alt. country and soul became fashionable whilst piano-led singer-songwriter ballads also grew in popularity. Meanwhile dance, hip hop and techno continued to grow making use of the advance technology of computer based music and sample based synthesizers.
Everyone knows the Vox Continental organ solo on The Animals' "House Of The Rising Sun" or the heart stopping thrum of The Prodigy's synth driven "Fire Starter" but few stop to consider the importance of keyboards in pop and rock. The Totally Interactive Keyboard Bible will do for the history of organs and synths what The Totally Interactive Guitar Bible and its successors have done for the electric guitar.
(Left) Jimmy Smith looks cool as he coaxes the keys of his Hammond. (Above right) Vince Clarke allows himself a day to program his synth!
With two top musicians and a huge array of vintage and new gear (including grand piano, Vox Continental, Hammond C3, mini Moog, ARP2600, Profit 5, Rhodes Suitcase, Wurlitzer P200A, Solina string machine and more) you are guaranteed a unique and enjoyable visual and aural experience. We'll keep you informed with the latest news as this project unfolds and will be sure to post some examples soon.

What's New 11 January 2008
Happy New Year everybody!
First up, two exciting new titles for early 2008. Coming Soon:
Bowie In Berlin tells the fascinating story of the three years David Bowie spent in Germany in the mid 1970s, making the most extraordinary music of his career.
Driven to the brink of madness by cocaine, overwork, marital strife, and a paranoid obsession with the occult, Bowie fled Los Angeles in 1975 and ended up in Berlin, the divided city on the frontline between communist East and capitalist West. There he sought anonymity, taking an apartment in a run-down district with his sometime collaborator Iggy Pop, another refugee from drugs and debauchery, while they explored the city and its notorious nightlife.
In this intensely creative period, Bowie put together three classic albums: Low, "Heroes", and Lodger (with collaborators who included Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, and Tony Visconti). He also found time to produce two albums for Iggy Pop (The Idiot and Lust For Life) and to take a leading role in a movie, the ill-starred Just A Gigolo.
This book tells the story of that period and those records, exploring Bowie's fascination with the city, unearthing his sources of inspiration, detailing his working methods, and teasing out the elusive meanings of the songs. Painstakingly researched and vividly written, the book casts new light on the most creative and influential era in David Bowie's career.
Beatles For Sale is a brand new way of looking at a story you may think you know inside out. Author John Blaney shows for the first time how the group and their inner circle invented so much of what we now recognise as the modern business of making and selling rock music. This was certainly not because Lennon, McCartney, Epstein, and the rest had a clear vision of the way things ought to be. Very often it was simply down to making things up as they went along (because no one had been there before and no one knew how to do these things). The book details the ups and downs of the group as they promoted, advertised, and sold records, played concerts, sold merchandise, made films, and set up publishing and record companies of their own. It is a story of naivety and greed, inexperience and luck, gullibility and ingenuity. It is the story of every aspect of how The Beatles made money (and how virtually every group since then has followed in their footsteps).
We have recently opened a Youtube page where you can view extracts from the wonderful DVDs that accompany our Interactive Series (the samples are from Totally Interactive Band Bible, Interactive Fender Bible and Totally Interactive Guitar Bible). Please check out the videos and leave comments as we're always eager to hear what you think.
For starters, here are Dave Hunter and XTC's Dave Gregory discussing and playing some shimmering Rickenbackers.
Finally, we've had many correct answers in for our Four Decades Of Folk Rock competition... and we only have one copy left. Answer the question in the below blog and it could be yours.

News from Domenic Priore, author of Riot On Sunset Strip 08 November 2007
Venice tonight, Liverpool radio broadcast rescheduled for November 17
You may have noticed that on October 27, the interview about Riot on Sunset Strip: Rock 'n' Roll's Last Stand in Hollywood, did not appear on Spencer Leigh's BBC Radio Merseyside program "On The Beat". It was bumped to Saturday, November 17, 2007. The show will air at 6:30 p.m. (Greenwich Mean Time) on that day, so, in California, you can wake up on Saturday morning and hear it over tea from Liverpool at 10:30 a.m. (or, 1:30 p.m. in New York City). Spencer is the author of "Let's Go Down The Cavern," so he's someone well-qualified to talk about a music scene like the one on Sunset Strip during 1965/1966. Click one the link, for November 17:

His Bobness recommends buying Million Dollar Bash this xmas! 07 November 2007
The first Jawbone blog ... Million Dollar Bash 02 November 2007
As you may know, musician, author, journalist, broadcaster, and raconteur Sid Griffin has written our recently published and highly regarded Dylan tome. To promote the book the author will be taking a rather special show out on the road.
In my first blog it seems fitting to talk about this affable chap and the first of his "Basement Tapes" shows, which I was lucky enough to attend on Nov 1st at The Green Note in Camden. This intimate venue offers great veggie food (which admittedly I didn't try, but will do next time), organic lagers and an array of vodkas. The walls are covered with tasteful prints of '60s and '70s folk and rock icons and the place emits just the right amount of boho cool. It was the perfect venue for Sid's debut spoken word and songs show.
Hitting the small, subtly lit stage at 9PM Sid spoke with ease about his Basement Tape theories, interspersing key moments with snippets of the folk and blues tunes that Dylan was returning to whilst holed up in Woodstock. He held the audience's attention for the entire 45 mins, peppering the show with liberal amounts of humour. Sid certainly informed and entertained; a master of his craft. At 10:00 he returned for more songs and chat, including a number of Basement Tapes works, ending with a rousing version of The Long Ryders classic 'Looking For Lewis & Clark' (which references the "great Bob Dylan" ).
